1. Tennis Elbow
As the name suggests, tennis elbow is a very common injury for tennis players. It is caused by overworking the joints and tendons of the elbow. In tennis, along with other racket sports, the elbow endures a lot of stress throughout a tennis match.
If a player gets tennis elbow, they should rest, ice, and possibly take anti-inflammatory medication. To prevent it, players should choose a racket that's the correct size for their hand so they aren't gripping too hard. Additionally, players should regularly take breaks and do some stretches for the elbow and wrist muscles.
2. Shoulder Pain
The second most common tennis injury is shoulder pain. This injury is also caused by overworking the area while playing. It's especially common for the rotator cuff tendons to get stressed from serving. If a player has shoulder pain they should rest and ice the area until they are ready to play again.
The best method for players hoping to prevent this injury is to adjust their serve so that they put less strain on their shoulder. For instance, the server should hit the ball while it is a little in front of them rather than hitting it while it's behind them.
3. Back Stress Fracture
Next is another injury that is exacerbated by the stress of serving in tennis. A back stress fracture is quite common in tennis due to the movement players do throughout a game. This consistent tension on the lower back can eventually cause a stress fracture in the back.
To prevent this injury, a player should make sure their serving technique is exhibiting proper form. This is very true for newer players who aren't as familiar with the sport. If a player ends up with a stress fracture, they should rest for about six weeks in order to correctly heal.
4. Knee Pain
Knee pain is a common injury not only for tennis players but also in most sports. In tennis, players put a lot of pressure on their knees by constantly changing directions in order to hit the ball. This strain can either cause general knee pain or even a tear in serious cases.
If a player's knee begins to hurt they should try to rest and ice the area before returning to the sport. Additionally, warming up and stretching before playing tennis is helpful. If a player has consistent knee issues they can also wear a brace to help support their knees.
5. Ankle Sprain
The last most common tennis injury is an ankle sprain. Similar to knee pain, this is caused by the constant pressure throughout a game. While players are running across the court and quickly changing directions to hit a ball, this can cause the player to strain, tear, or roll their ankles.
To avoid this injury, players should wear sneakers made specially for playing tennis. Players can also wear an ankle brace for additional support. If a player does sprain their ankle, they should rest and ice their ankle. They also may need to take medication or see a physical therapist.
