What Are The Important Safety Rules for Swimming?
To ensure safety while swimming, it is important to familiarize yourself with certain guidelines and restrictions about the water. These are crucial for your personal safety and others in the area as well.
It is discouraged to swim alone. Always make sure you have a swimming buddy or appropriate supervision. Supervision includes a parent, adult, or a lifeguard. It is especially important that a lifeguard is present and swimmers respect their instruction. If you are alone, be especially aware of safety protocol and where certain safety equipment is located in case of emergency.
Entering the Water
When entering the water, be aware of your surroundings. Do not dive if it is not permitted and if you do, make sure there are no heavy or sharp objects around that you can get hurt on. It is also important to ensure the depth of the pool as jumping into a shallow area can cause severe injury.
As you are swimming, stay focused on your actions and surroundings. Do not swim into unclear or foggy areas and stay away from dangerous objects in the water. If it is nighttime, make sure you are swimming in a visible area. Always try to stay within your abilities as a new stroke or deeper areas of the pool can be unfamiliar and dangerous.
Around the Water
Outside of the water, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. Do not run around the area because it may be slippery and can cause injury. Also be conscious of the weather and if you hear lightning or thunder, exit the water immediately.
