List of Archery Sports

The category of archery sports is used to define any sport that uses a bow and arrow to hit a target. These targets can either be moving or inanimate depending on the sport. Archery sports can be enjoyed recreationally or competitively. The most common forms of archery are ones seen in the olympics which tend to have the archer standing from a set distance trying to hit a circular target with ranging point values.

There are multiple pieces of equipment that are needed for archery sports such as a bow, arrows, a target (not all archery sports), and other accessories to protect the archer. The bow is a curved piece of wood, plastic or metal with a taut string attached to the ends. An arrow is a pointy stick of varying materials with multiple plastic or feather fletchings on the end. Targets are not always needed depending on the sport, but are usually solid surfaces with rings on the face that have varying point systems.

It is difficult to trace the origins or archery sports to any specific time period since bows and arrows have been used for hunting since the stone age. However, the earliest known record of people playing archery sports was the Ancient Egyptians around 3,000 B.C. China, the earliest modern day civilization to practice archery, began to host tournaments and events as early as 1,766 B.C. Archery sports are one of the oldest games still around today.

While many may consider archery sports to be expensive, they can be enjoyed for a reasonable price. You can buy a bow and arrows for relatively cheap and can practice anywhere, such as your backyard. However, if you want to take the sport more seriously, high quality bows can be expensive and range costs/club member fees can definitely have a large price tag. However serious a person decides to take archery sports, almost everyone can find an affordable method of practicing.
