Soccer has some of the most confusing slang of all professional sports. So many descriptors are rooted in slang no longer in use, but stuck around the game for reasons I'm not sure of. Regardless, poacher is one of the most commonly used words to describe a particular kind of forward.
A poacher is a forward who has a knack for finding the ball in the opposition's 18-yard box and putting the ball in the back of the net every time. Harry Kane, of Tottenham and England fame, is one of the most well known. A poacher is a player who more often than not does not have an elite flashy, skill; They don't have dazzle with dribbling or shooting, but do so many fundamentals well to pair with a high knowledge of the game. These two skills pair to allow for the poacher to seemingly always be around the ball with an opportunity to score, predominantly scoring on rebound shoots and set pieces.
