What is a cross in soccer?
A cross is a curved kick from a corner kick or from the wider edges of the pitch. Most often, this is done by an attacking team, attempting to complete the cross to a teammate who is in the penalty area, who then shoots or heads the ball into the net. Sometimes, this is used to simply pass the ball to an open teammate on the other side of the pitch. Crosses move the ball quickly from one side of the pitch to the other and force the defense to shift quickly. Crosses, especially off of corners, are typically aerial balls. Crosses are a great strategy for creating a scoring opportunity.
