Each team plays a total of 34 games as they face each opponent in the league once at home and once away. There are no playoffs in the Bundesliga as the winner is determined through a point system. Each team received 3 points for every game they win, 1 point for every draw, and 0 points for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season in crowned the German football champion. If two teams are tied at the end of the season the winner is determined by these tie breakers in the order that follows:

  1. Goal differential for the entire season
  2. Total number of goals scored for the entire season
  3. Most points earned in head to head matches between the two teams tied
  4. Most totals goals scored in head to head matches between the two teams tied
  5. Away goals scored in head to head matches between the two teams tied
  6. Total number of goals scored during away games during the entire season

The Bundesliga operates on a promotion and relegation system. The bottom two teams in the standing get relegated to the 2nd tier German football league for the next season while the top two teams in the standings of the 2nd tier German league are promoted to the Bundesliga.
