Regulation

We know about the basic structure of a soccer match. Every soccer match is made up of two halves. Together, these halves are called regulation.

But what happens if the score is tied at the end of regulation? In this tutorial, we will learn about overtime periods of play called extra time that are used to determine the winning team of a soccer match.

How is the winning team determined?

According to FIFA regulations, a match winner is decided in one of three ways:

  1. Extra Time
  2. The Away Goals Rules
  3. Penalty Kicks

In certain cases, such as club competition or the group stage at the FIFA World Cup, the match is permitted to end in a draw. At the FIFA World Cup, when all head-to-head matches are completed, a team's total points are tallied for wins, draws and losses to determine which teams advance from the group stage.

What is extra time in soccer?

If the score remains tied at the end of regulation and additional stoppage time, and the match format is a knockout competition, two extra periods will be played to determine the winner. Extra time is similar to overtime in other sports.

How does extra time work?

  • At the professional level, each period lasts 15 minutes, including additional stoppage time added on to each interval. If the score remains tied at the end of two extra time periods, penalty kicks are performed to determine the winner.
  • After the completion of regulation and additional stoppage time, teams are permitted a five-minute rest to recover and strategize with their coaches. In recent years, teams are now allowed to make a fourth substitution before the start of extra time or during the first period of extra time, regardless of whether they have used all three allotted substitution players in regulation time.
  • Another coin toss with the captains settles which team defends each goal and who will kickoff first. At the start of each extra time interval, the ball is put into play with a kickoff. Teams change halves in between each extra time interval, but there is minimal rest allowed.
  • Extra time play is usually very tense and exhausting for the players involved, but very exciting for a fan!
