Learn To Skateboard

Learn Skateboarding

Skateboarding can be learned in many ways. First, you can learn with an instructor. You first would have to research and find if there are instructors near you. A company called Go Skate usually has instructors all across the country. Although learning from a more experienced skater is extremely valuable, it can be extremely expensive.

You can also learn through online tutorials. The most well known company that teaches skateboarding is called Braille. They are a skateboarding company based out of San Francisco, California and it is run by professional skateboarder Aaron Kyro. They have a countless amount of tutorials online, and they are for free!

Learning with a group of friends is also very helpful, especially if they are more experienced than you. Skating with a group not only makes it fun, but also motivates everybody to continue to progress on the skills. Skating with someone who is more experienced is also helpful because it allows you to ask questions that beginners may not have the answer to.

Ways To Get Into Skateboarding

To get into skateboarding, you will first need a board. You can either look online or go to your local skate shop to buy one. When buying a board you can either buy a complete skateboard, or buy the individual parts. After you buy the board, you should get some safety equipment. Now you are ready to get into skateboarding.

People generally get into the sport by themselves, or a group of friends who are also willing to give it a try. When you first start, you should get comfortable riding around your board. This means cruising around the sidewalk, going off curbs, and learning basic tricks like the ollie. Once you get more control over your board, then you can start heading to the skatepark.

The skatepark is also a great place to get into skating. Depending on the park, you can practice different disciplines of skating such as transition and street. When you start going to your local park, you can come in the mornings when it is not as busy. This will allow you to learn without having the pressure of running into anybody else.

Teaching Yourself

For some people, they can watch a person skateboard and learn it on their own without any guidance. However, the majority of people need some type of guidance when they first start, but this does not mean that has to be physically there with you. You can learn through online tutorials and follow instructions step by step. So technically, you are teaching yourself because you are not getting feedback you would need to correct whatever you are doing wrong. You will learn quicker if you have another person with you as well. They can see what you are doing wrong that you may not be able to see yourself.

For example, let’s say you are practicing your ollie (jumping with your board) by yourself. A common problem is when your shoulders turn while you jump, which also turns your board, and you land crooked without knowing why. If you had another person with you, they may be able to notice that you are turning your shoulders and will help you correct it right away. Skateboarding is a sport of repetition, so if you are constantly repeating ‘bad’ repetitions, then your body will get used to doing the trick incorrectly.

Time To Learn Skateboarding

There is no real timeline on how fast it will take you to learn skateboarding because it is different for everybody. For some, learning an ollie can take a couple years of practice, and for others it might take no more than a month. However, to learn the fastest way possible, you should be skating almost everyday. Create a schedule for yourself that allows you to skate for an hour or two everyday. This will give you the opportunity to learn the basics such as riding and ollying, and will help you get more control over your board.

Although all you need are the basics in order to have fun, learning to skateboard never stops. There is always a new trick to learn. Whether it be a transition, flip, or freestyle trick, the best skateboarders are constantly expanding their skillset so they can continue to have fun and get better.

Skateboarding Difficulty

Skateboarding can be extremely difficult, but this should not deter you from playing the sport. It is essentially like trying to learn another language; you will get better with practice and repetition.

The most difficult part for beginners is going to be getting comfortable on your board. As your level of comfort increases so does your stability, and a more stable skater means having more tricks in your repertoire.

People also see age as a deterrent for participating in the sport. Although it is true that it is better to learn these skills at a young age, it is never too late, so do not let it discourage you.

Skateboarding Equipment

To start skateboarding you will need the following:

  • Skateboard
  • Deck
  • Grip Tape
  • Trucks
  • Wheels
  • Bearings
  • Hardwear (nails)
  • Knee Pads
  • Elbow Pads
  • Helmet
  • Skate Tool
  • Skate shoes

When buying a skateboard, you can either buy a complete one, which is a board that is already assembled, or put one together yourself. Completed boards are great for beginners. You may be asking: why would I put it together myself when I can just buy one that is already set up? The completed skateboards are generally smaller and are made with cheaper materials. When you create your own custom board, it can vary in size and shape, and the equipment will last you a longer time.

To build your own skateboard, you will need all the materials listed under the bullet point ‘skateboard’ above. The deck is the board itself and the grip tape goes on top of it. This provides a better grip for your shoes. Trucks are the ‘T’ shaped metal parts that go underneath the board, and are where your wheels get attached. Bearings go into the holes of the wheels, and they allow you to roll on the board. Once the trucks are assembled, you use your skate tool and the hardware to attach them to your board and you are all done!

Cost To Skateboard

The cost of skateboarding can vary depending on how you are trying to learn. If you want to learn through online tutorials then all you need is your board and some safety equipment and you are ready to go. Complete boards can range from $80-110. Helmets can be $30-50 and a pack of knee and elbow pads are about $40.  You also need a pair of durable shoes, and those can go for $50 in the sale section of a skate store.

You can also learn through private or group classes. Small group classes can range from $95-195 for lessons at public recreation departments and $195-595 for private camps. Private are $229-699 depending on the amount of session.
