Arm and Leg Warmers
Pole burns are abrasions or chafing caused by the friction of the dancer's skin rubbing against the pole. Because friction generates heat, it creates a mild burn on the dancer's skin. Pole burns are especially common among beginning pole dancers who have skin that is still delicate and sensitive. Thankfully, dancers can wear arm warmers to reduce the risk of getting pole burns. Leg warmers can also be used to prevent pole burns on the legs. Arm and leg warmers protect the body from direct contact with the pole and can also allow dancers to perform smoother spins. Arm and leg warmers are designed to be lightweight and give the dancer's skin plenty of space to breathe. The elasticity of the fabric makes this piece of equipment comfortable to wear for any pole dancer, regardless of their arm size.
Because arm and leg warmers are not completely effective at preventing pole burns and bruises, Arnica gel is helpful to have on hand to treat minor injuries when they occur. Arnica gel is a natural pain reliever and can be used to treat a variety of pole-related burns and bruises. Arnica gel should be applied as soon as possible after a bruise occurs to reduce swelling and speed up the healing process.
Cleaning supplies such as mops, brooms, dustpans, and disinfectant solutions are essential to have on hand in pole dancing studios. After every session, the pole dancing studio should be properly cleaned to prevent germs from spreading and to avoid the cultivation of bad odors. It is also a good idea for dancers to keep a personal supply of hand sanitizer to use after every dance session.
Crash pads are essential to ensure pole dancing is performed in a safe manner. Crash pads are soft foam cushions that wrap around the bottom of the pole and provide a soft barrier for the dancer in the event that they slip and fall off the pole. Instead of falling onto a wooden floor, the dancer hits the crash pad instead and avoids injury.
Grip aids decrease the risk of dancers falling in the event that they lose their handle on the pole due to poor grip. Grip aids make the pole dancer's hands stickier, and allow them to grip the pole more tightly without any extra effort. They are especially useful for dancers who tend to have sweaty palms and for dancers performing in extremely humid areas where the pole becomes too wet and slippery to obtain a proper grip. Along with being used for hands, grip aids can be used on other parts of the body such as the arms, legs, or any body part that comes in direct contact with the pole while dancing. Although grip aids do not guarantee a dancer will never fall off the pole, they are extremely helpful for increasing the dancer's grip and preventing them from slipping unexpectedly.
Lighting is an essential component that greatly enhances the atmosphere of pole dancing studios. Not only does proper illumination enhance the ambiance of a dance studio, but it also allows dancers to properly observe their technique. Lights should be placed on the ceiling of studios no more than four to six feet apart from each other. The goal is to have the studio completely filled with light and for there to be no shadows.
A high-quality microfiber towel is an essential for any pole dancer's gym bag. These towels are great for dancers who want to keep dry during a pole dancing session. They can also be used to wipe the pole down when it becomes too slippery to properly grip. As opposed to regular towels, microfiber towels fold up very small, which makes them very portable and easy to transport. These types of towels also dry very quickly and are antibacterial.
Mirrors are great to have in pole dancing studios to allow dancers to observe their technique while performing. Non-glass mirrors such as polycarbonate mirrors or acrylic mirrors are the popular choices for dance studio mirrors. Acrylic mirrors are lightweight, 100 times stronger than glass, and can be cleaned by applying a simple solution of warm water and soap. Polycarbonate mirrors are nearly 200 times stronger than glass mirrors and are a popular choice for outdoor dance studios because of their excellent weather resistance. The downside to polycarbonate mirrors is that they can be rather expensive.
There are generally three types of poles when it comes to pole dancing. The first kind of pole is the portable pole held in place by pressure. These types of poles are ideal for beginner dancers because of their safety and ease of use. These poles are held in place by pressure between the floor and the ceiling.
