Lee Petty won the first Daytona 500. On February 22, 1959, Petty narrowly defeated Johnny Beauchamp. In fact, Beauchamp was first declared the winner, but Petty challenged the results and a photograph of their close finish revealed days later that Petty was indeed the first ever winner of the Daytona 500.
