Football Defensive Positions

The defense is the team that does not have the ball. There are eleven (11) players on the field for the defense. The defensive player positions in football are:

Nose Tackle

The nose tackle is a lineman of the defensive line. The nose tackle counters the center on the offensive line.

Left Tackle

The left tackle is a lineman of the defensive line. The left tackle counters the right guard on the offensive line.

Right Tackle

The right tackle is a lineman of the defensive line. The right tackle counters the left guard on the offensive line.

Defensive End

The defensive end is a lineman of the defensive line and stand near the sidelines. Defense ends counter either the left tackle or right tackle of the offensive line.

Cornerback

The cornerback is a defensive back who counters wide receivers by following the routes that they run and blocking passes thrown by the quarterback.

Linebacker

The linebacker is a defensive back who defends against the pass, blitzes the quarterback, and tackles the ball carrier depending on the play.

Free Safety

The free safety is a defensive back who defends against passes thrown in the defensive backfield. The free safety stands on the weak side of the field opposite where the tight end on offense is.

Strong Safety

The strong safety is a defensive back who defends against passes thrown in the defensive backfield. The strong safety stands on the strong side of the field where the tight end on offense is.
