At all times during an ice hockey game, one team is on offense and the other team is on defense.
In this tutorial, we will learn what being on defense means.
The team that does not have possession of the puck in an ice hockey game is on defense. Players on defense are called defensive players.
Goals While On Defense
The goals of an ice hockey team when on defense are the following:
- to prevent a goal by the other team
- to get possession of the puck for their team
While on defense a team accomplishes these tasks by keeping the puck out of the defensive zone and applying pressure to offensive players.
From Defense To Offense
In ice hockey, teams are constantly trading ownership of the puck. As a result, teams are moving between all three zones on the ice (the attacking zone, neutral zone, and defensive zone) as well as changing from defense to offense.
