What is alternate captain in hockey?

Alternate Captains

An alternate captain in hockey is a designated player on a hockey team that wears the letter A on his jersey. Teams are allowed two alternate captains or three when the captain is not playing at all during the game. These players fulfill the duties of the captain when he isn't in the game for some reason (penalty box, injury, or on the bench). These duties are talking and interpreting rules with the referee during gameplay and leading the team.
