The Ottawa Senators are a hockey team in the NHL. The Senators play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Senators were added to the NHL in 1992 as an expansion team, along with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Some of the most famous Senators players include Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson and Chris Phillips. Erik Karlsson was traded at the beginning of the 2018-19 season to the San Jose Sharks. This was part of the firesale the Senators underwent to rebuild their roster.
The Senators are owned by Eugene Melnyk. Melnyk has been known to prioritize team finances over team skill, which has led to a lack of talent on the Senators roster. The head coach is D.J. Smith, who replaced Marc Crawford. Before Crawford, Guy Boucher had success in Ottawa as the bench boss, leading the Senators to double overtime in game 7 of the Conference Finals in 2017.
Stadium & Mascot
The Senators play in the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. Their mascot is Spartacat, which is a play on Spartacus.
The Senators play in the Atlantic Division, along with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Detroit Red Wings. In the 2018-19 season, the Senators finished last in the Atlantic Division out of 8 teams.
Battle of Ontario
The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators both reside in the province of Ontario, leading to a heated rivalry. Furthermore, both teams play in the Atlantic Division of the NHL. Throughout a given season, the 'Battle of Ontario' refers to all games played between Ottawa and Toronto.
Trading Away Talent
Ever since the 2017 season, when the Senators had great success, they have been in a free fall. Things started poorly when they gave away too many assets to acquire Matt Duchene from the Avalanche in a three way trade. The Senators would eventually trade Duchene to Columbus. The other big talents the Senators cut out in the 2018-19 season include Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone, and Ryan Dzingle.
As a result of trading away Karlsson, Duchene, Stone, and Dzingle, the Senators have stockpiled draft picks and prospects. Now that they've drafted young stud Brady Tkachuk, the Senators look forward to a talented future roster. However, they have a few years of turmoil ahead of them.
