NHL All-Star Voting Process

There are two ways for players to make the NHL All-Star Game: be chosen by the NHL Department of Hockey Operations or be selected in the NHL All-Star Fan Vote. Read on to learn more about the selection process for the NHL All-Star Game.
NHL Department of Hockey Operations Roster Selections
The NHL Department of Hockey Operations provides the initial 32 roster selections for the NHL All-Star Game. One player from each of the 32 teams is chosen by the department to ensure that each team is represented at the NHL All-Star Game.
The divisional rosters after the NHL Department of Hockey Operations selects its initial 32 players will feature seven skaters and one goaltender. Therefore, four goaltenders and 28 skaters are selected by the NHL Department of Hockey Operations.
NHL All-Star Fan Vote
The NHL All-Star Fan Vote determines the final 12 players that will go to the NHL All-Star Game. Each division’s final two skaters and one goaltender are determined by the NHL All-Star Fan Vote. This ensures each division will end up having the same number of skaters (9) and goaltenders (2).
The NHL All-Star Fan Vote takes place in two places: the official NHL website and Twitter. The NHL website features a poll where fans can vote for their favorite players to be selected to the NHL All-Star Game. Fans can also tweet using the hashtag #NHLAllStarVote along with the name of the player to cast a vote for them through Twitter. The players with the most votes in each division will take the remaining three spots on each divisional roster.
Only certain players are eligible to be on the ballot for the NHL All-Star Fan Vote. Eligible players must have been on an NHL roster as of December 1st of that season, and not have been sent down to the minors for anything other than an official conditioning stint.
