Overtime In Hockey
Overtime in hockey is an extra period of play after regulation used to determine the winning team if the score is tied. The rules differ for NHL regular season games and NHL post eason games. During the NHL regular season, overtime periods last five minutes. During the NHL post season, overtime periods last 20 minutes. It is a sudden-death format. There is only a shootout at the end of an NHL regular season overtime period, not in the NHL postseason.
