What are Blockers in Football?

A blocker in football is a player who specializes in blocking opposing players. Blockers are used in the offense, defense, and special teams. Blockers can be offensive linemen, defensive linemen, tight ends, or linebackers depending on the play.

On offense, the primary blockers are the offensive linemen who protect the Quarterback and Running Back. The Tight End may also block on offense. On defense, the defensive line may block for linebackers or defensive backs who are trying to get through the line of scrimmage during a blitz. On special teams, blockers are tasked with guarding the kick returner from the kicking team who are trying to tackle them.

Players who are primary ball carriers, like Running Backs, Quarterbacks, and Wide Receivers can also be blockers.
