Bracketing the field in basketball is the process by which the 16 teams within each of the four regions are further separated into four pods. This then allows fans to create a preliminary bracket according to the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament rules, which outline the team pairings for each round. For example, during the First Round, or the Round of 64, the following teams must face off against each other in all four regions:

In pod 1: Seeds 1 vs Seeds 16 Seeds 8 vs Seeds 9

In pod 2: Seeds 4 vs Seeds 13 Seeds 5 vs Seeds 12

In pod 3: Seeds 2 vs Seeds 15 Seeds 7 vs Seeds 10

In pod 4: Seeds 3 vs Seeds 14 Seeds 6 vs Seeds 11
