How Many Super Bowls Have The Colts Won?
The final game of every National Football League (NFL) season is the Super Bowl. This is the game that decides the league's overall champion. Every year since 1967, the game has served this purpose. In that time, plenty of teams have won the game multiple times. One of those teams is the Indianapolis Colts (previously in Baltimore from 1953 to 1984). The remainder of this piece will discuss their two championships in detail, as well as their close defeats.
Super Bowl III
In 1969 at Super Bowl III in Miami, Florida, the Baltimore Colts made their first Super Bowl appearance. At this time, the NFL and the American Football League (AFL) had yet to merge, so the Super Bowl was still between the two leagues. The Colts were NFL members at the time, and they took on the New York Jets of the AFL. The Colts were extremely heavy favorites in this game, but the underdog Jets were not scared of the moment. The Jets led 13-0 after three quarters and would go on to win the game 16-7. Jets quarterback Joe Namath, who guaranteed that the Jets would win the day before the game, backed up his words and was named MVP. Namath threw for 206 yards on 17 of 28 completed passes.
Super Bowl V
In 1971, the Baltimore Colts made their second Super Bowl appearance in three years. At Super Bowl V in Miami, Florida, the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Colts took on the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys took a 13-6 lead into halftime, and the score remained the same after three quarters. The Colts scored ten unanswered fourth-quarter points and won their first Super Bowl title by a score of 16-13. Despite the Colts’ victory, Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley took home the game’s MVP award after registering two interceptions. Howley remains the only player from a losing team to win a Super Bowl MVP award.
Super Bowl XLI
Thirty-six years after their first Super Bowl title, the Colts, now in Indianapolis, took home their second championship. At Super Bowl XLI in Miami, Florida, The AFC champion Colts took on the Chicago Bears of the NFC. The Bears led 14-6 after one quarter, but the Colts scored ten straight second-quarter points to take a two-point lead into halftime. They only expanded on their lead from there, and the Colts eventually won by a final score of 29-17. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning went on to win the game’s MVP award, throwing for 247 yards and one touchdown on 25 of 38 completed passes.
Super Bowl XLIV
In 2010, the Colts made their most recent Super Bowl appearance at Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Florida. Their opponent was the NFC champion New Orleans Saints. The Colts started the game well and took a 10-0 lead after one quarter and still led 10-6 at halftime. They were just clinging to a 17-16 lead after three quarters, but from there, it was all New Orleans, and the Saints went on to win the game by a score of 31-17. Drew Brees, the Saints quarterback, was named the game’s MVP after completing 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
When was the last time the Colts won the Super Bowl?
The last time the Colts won a Super Bowl was in 2007. That year, at Super Bowl XLI in Miami, Florida, they defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17 behind quarterback Peyton Manning’s MVP-winning performance. Manning had 247 passing yards and one touchdown on 25 of 38 completed passes. The Colts made it back to the Super Bowl in 2010, but there they lost to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints 31-17.
