Big 12 College Football Championship History

The Big 12 Championship Game was first played in 1996. The Big 12 was originally split into North and South divisions, and the winners of each division would face off in the championship game. This format lasted through 2010. After that season, Colorado and Nebraska left the conference, leaving the Big 12 with only 10 teams. NCAA rules at that time stated that a conference must have at least 12 members to hold a championship game, so there was no Big 12 Championship Game until the rule was changed for the 2017 season.

Historically, the game has been dominated by the Oklahoma Sooners, who have 11 wins in 12 appearances, including wins in four of the six games since 2017. Several Oklahoma quarterbacks from recent championship-winning teams have gone on to the NFL, including Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts.

Former Big 12 member Nebraska won two of the first four games, in 1997 and 1999. The Cornhuskers moved to the Big Ten Conference in 2010.
