Football Missed Field Goals

Chapter 6.4

In this chapter, we will learn how teams change possession of the ball after a missed field goal attempt.

Introduction

We've already learned about field goals in past chapters and that the special teams unit is called onto the field to perform them. But what happens when a team misses a field goal?

Missed Field Goals

When a team attempts a field goal and misses what happens? Missed field goals are considered a change of possession because immediately afterwards the other team will get the ball.

The Spot Of The Ball

Where does the team get the ball on the field after a missed field goal attempt? The spot of the ball is either

  • at the spot of the kick
  • placed on the 20-yard line

It all depends on what yard line the kick was attempted on.

Inside The 20-yard line

The field goal was attempted from inside the opponent's 20-yard line. If it misses, the ball is placed on the 20-yard line.

Outside The 20-yard line

the field goal was attempted from outside the opponent's 20-yard line. If it misses, the ball is placed at the spot of the kick.

In either case, the opposing team gets possession of the ball and the down cycle starts anew with a set of four (4) scrimmage downs.
