Football Field Position

Field position describes where the ball is on a football field in relation to a team's end zone. A team is in good field position when they are close to the other team's end zone and in bad field position when they are close to their own end zone. A football field can be divided into three zones:

IMPORTANT: field position is always relative to a team. The red zone and green zone switch sides of the field based on which team you are referring to.

Football Red Zone

The red zone is the area on the football field from the opposing team's 20-yard line to the the goal line. When a team is in the red zone, they have a very high chance of scoring points.

Football Green Zone

The green zone is the area on the football field from a team's own 20-yard line to their goal line. When a team is in the green zone, they have a low chance of scoring points.

Football Midfield Territory

Midfield Territory is the area on the football field between the red zone and green zone.

Good Field Position

A team is in good field position if they are in the red zone or in midfield territory. With good field position:

  • A team has a HIGH chance of scoring points
  • The opposing team has a LOW chance of scoring points

Football Field Goal

To prevent a turnover on downs, a team should go for a field goal on 4th down whenever they are in good field position.

REMEMBER: When a team is in good field position, this also implies they are within field goal range.

Bad Field Position

A team is in bad field position if they are in the green zone. With bad field position:

  • A team has a LOW chance of scoring points
  • The opposing team has a HIGH chance of scoring points

Football Punt

To prevent a turnover on downs a team should go for a punt on 4th down whenever they are in bad field position. With a punt, a team will be back in good field position.
