Football Field Position

Chapter 10.1

What is field position? Why does it matter? Get ready to learn about field position and its importance in football.

Introduction

Field position describes the location of a team and the ball on the field. We've learned in past chapters that the line of scrimmage shows the spot of the ball on a football field. So, a team is located wherever the line of scrimmage is.

Field Position

A team's field position is a deciding factor in what strategies they employ on the field. In football, a team will think of a football field in three zones:

IMPORTANT: field position is always relative to a team. The red zone and green zone switch sides of the field depending on which team you are talking about.

The Red Zone

The red zone is the area on the field from the opposing team's 20-yd line to the their opponent's goal line. When a team is in the red zone, they have a very high chance of scoring points.

The Green Zone

The green zone is the area on the field from a team's own 20-yd line to the their own goal line. When a team is in the green zone, they have a low chance of scoring points.

Midfield Territory

Midfield Territory is the same for everyone. It is the area of the field in between the red zone and green zone

Good Field Position

A team is in good field position if they are in the red zone or in midfield territory. Why?

  • a team has a high chance of scoring points
  • the opposing team has a low chance of scoring points

If a team is in good field position they should consider a field-goal on 4th down.

REMEMBER: a team should only try for a field goal if they are confident their kicker can succeed. A team should be in field goal range before attempting a field goal.

Bad Field Position

A team is in bad field position if they are in the green zone. Why?

  • a team has a low chance of scoring points
  • the opposing team has a high chance of scoring points

If a team is in bad field position they should consider a punt on 4th down.
