In the NFL’s current playoff format, six Wild Card teams are selected for the playoffs each year. These teams are decided by their overall win-loss record for the season, with tiebreakers in place for teams that finish with the same number of wins and losses. The Wild Card teams play against their conference’s division winners in the first round of the playoffs, known as the Wild Card Round.
