Fishing is a sport that can be engaged in leisurely or competitively. The goal is to catch as many fish as possible by casting a hook attached to a line into the water. This is done using fishing rods, which come in a variety of different sizes depending on the location and target fish species. When the operator of the rod feels a tug indicating that a fish has successfully latched onto the hook, the fish is brought towards the boat or casting spot by quickly reeling in the line using a lever that is attached to the rod. Most people opt to use worms as bait, which refers to the item attached to the hook in order to attract a hungry fish. However, certain situations are better suited for lures, which are plastic attachments that float atop the surface of the water.
Unlike fishing for pleasure, fishing competitions have a strict set of rules and regulations, permitting contestants to cast their lines only in certain locations over the course of a previously established time limit.
