Curling Sweepers

Sweepers

A sweeper is a teammate that is sweeping a curling stone. Within an end of curling, different teammates will sweep at different times. There will always be a minimum of two teammates sweeping a stone.

Curling SweeperWhen does each position sweep in curling?

There are lots of positions in curling and each one is responsible for being the sweeper at various times in a game.

Lead Sweeping

The lead will sweep the stones thrown by the second, vice, and skip. It does not matter which side of the stone the lead stands on, as long as the other sweeper stands on the opposite side of the stone. It also does not matter whether the lead sweeps closer to the stone, or farther from the stone. The only thing that matters is that one teammate sweeps closer to the stone and the other teammate sweeps closeby.

Second Sweeping

The second will sweep the stones thrown by the lead, vice, and skip. Just like the lead, it does not matter which side of the stone the second stands on, as long as the other sweeper stands on the opposite side of the stone. It also does not matter whether the second sweeps closer or farther from the stone.

Vice Sweeping

The vice will sweep the stones thrown by the lead and second. Just like the lead and second, it does not matter which side of the stone the second stands on, as long as the other sweeper stands on the opposite side of the stone. It also does not matter whether the second sweeps closer or farther from the stone.

Skip Sweeping

The skip is not assigned to sweep any specific stones, as they are at the opposite end of the sheet, calling the shots. The skip is allowed to go out to the sweepers and assist them at any time.
