Boxing Robes

What are robes in boxing?

Ring robes are another piece of the iconic boxer look. They come in a number of materials and styles, but are usually worn when a fighter walks up to the ring, and they are removed just before the fight begins. Ring robes are supposed to keep the boxer “warmed up” but in reality, the piece is more about fashion than practicality. Many robes started off with a more basic look, similar to a bath robe but eventually they became the objects of high fashion present in the professional boxing scene today. Now it is not uncommon to see a robe sport flashy colors, designs, and even sponsors for the boxer, much like the boxer’s trunks. Another notable change over the years was the addition of hoods, an appeal to the tough guy machismo aesthetic.
