What Equipment Do You Need For BMX?
To participate in Bicycle Motocross, there are only a couple of things that you must have.
- BMX Bike
- BMX Helmet
A bike is essential, but that is pretty self-explanatory. However, you’re very likely going to need a helmet. Not only is it in your best interest for safety reasons, but most BMX competitions will not let you compete without a helmet of some kind. Many will also require other safety equipment, but that varies by competition. We also recommend that you have:
- Knee Pad
- Elbow Pad
- Wrist Pad
- Gloves
- Shoes
- Pants
- Neck Brace
This equipment is used to protect you mostly. The knee pads, elbow pads, wrist pads, and gloves are very important as competing in BMX will take a toll on your upper body. BMX shoes are specially made to fit tightly into the pedals of BMX bikes, which will improve your performance. The BMX pants and neck brace are also for safety reasons, though maybe not as necessary as the other equipment.
Unique Equipment
Bicycle Motocross (BMX) shares many similarities to traditional Motocross. However, there is some equipment solely made for BMX such as BMX shoes and the parts used for the bikes.
Like we mentioned earlier, BMX shoes are made for the sport, making them unique in their own way. Some of the parts used on BMX bikes are not universal to all bicycles, so finding the right parts for your bike is essential.
Most Important Equipment
The most important parts to have for BMX is going to be the BMX bike, the safety equipment, and the spare parts. The bike and safety equipment will be needed to compete in the sport, but the spare parts will help you in the long run. Parts like spare pedals and different bike frames will not only help you determine your riding style, but will also safe you a trip in case of mechanical failure.
Total Cost
You can find a BMX bike for about $100, but the better quality bikes will cost you upwards of $150. You can find traditional bike helmets for about $20 but if you’re concerned for safety, you can find higher quality helmets for $50-100. You could also purchase a traditional motocross helmet for about $150+ which are made to withstand a strong blow. The padding will vary, but each piece will cost you anywhere between $20-$75.
