1-on-1 in basketball is a situation or game in which it is only one player on offense versus one player on defense. 1-on-1 situations can arise within larger games or can simply be played as an individual matchup of their own. 1-on-1's can happen on fast breaks during a game, or by design with an isolation play. Coaches will also frequently use 1-on-1 drills to help their players practice a specific skill. 1-on-1 matchups emphasize individual skills, defense, and endurance as each player is solely responsible for their own role in every 1-on-1 situation.
Players will also often challenge each other to individual 1-on-1 games to test their skills and compete against one another. These games will typically be played to a certain score chosen by the participants. The players can also choose whether to keep possession or alternate after each basket scored. 1-on-1 games are a great way for players to practice moves, build competition, and have fun while playing the game of basketball.
