The Cleveland Cavaliers are a member of the professional basketball league, The NBA. They are a part of the Eastern Conference and the Central Division. The Cavaliers play in Cleveland Ohio in Quicken Loans Arena. The primary colors of the Cavaliers are wine and gold, with navy blue also being present in some of their jerseys and logos.
The Cavaliers are currently coached by recently hired John Beilein, and the owner of the team is Dan Gilbert. Other important figures associated with the team are the mascot Moondog and general manager Kolby Altman.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were established in 1970 as an expansion team. Throughout their nearly 50 years of existence the Cavaliers have put forth several talented rosters and competed in the playoffs many times. The late 1980's and early 1990's and late 2000's Cavaliers teams were such teams, however they never won the elusive championship. In 2016 that changed as the team finally broke through and won an NBA Championship.
2016 NBA Championship
Without a doubt the most significant moment in Cavaliers history came during the 2015-2016 NBA season. Led by LeBron James, The Cavaliers made their way through the playoffs beating the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and the Toronto Raptors on their way to the NBA Finals. There they faced off against the Golden State Warriors who had just completed the greatest regular season ever finishing with a record of 73-9.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, and faced a daunting 3-1 series deficit, one that had never been overcome in the Finals in NBA history. Strong play from LeBron James along with supporting cast Kyrie Irving the Cavaliers evened up the series with victories in Oakland and then back in Cleveland. Game 7 was played back in Oakland and went down to the wire. The final two minutes was highlighted by LeBron James' epic block on Andre Iguadala, Kyrie Irving's go ahead three pointer, and LeBron's game sealing free throw.
The championship happened to be the first championship a sports team in Cleveland had won since the 1960's, giving it extreme importance to Cleveland sports fans.
Present Day Cavaliers
In the 2018-2019 season the Cavaliers finished with the league's second worst record. In the draft lottery they were awarded the fifth pick where they selected point guard Darius Garland from Vanderbilt. Heading into the 2019-2020 season the Cavaliers are hoping to continue developing their young core of players including: Garland, Colin Sexton, and Cedi Osman.
