In this chapter, we will be learning about violations in basketball. By the end of this chapter you'll understand all the types of violations and when they happen in a basketball game.


A violation is called on a player who breaks the rules of basketball defined by in the rulebook for a league. Violations result in possession of the ball for the other team.

In this chapter we will explore the types of violations that exist in basketball, when they happen, and what they result in.

IMPORTANT: Please note that the rules of basketball are slightly different at all levels of play (youth, college, pro).

First we'll learn what a violation is. Next, we'll go into the types of violations that exist in basketball and the things that happen as a result. By the end of this chapter, you'll know what a violation is and be able to spot them during a game.
