The Player Positions
We've already learned that basketball is a 5-on-5 game. As a result, each team has five (5) players at all times on the court. Each of these players has a unique role and responsibility during a game.
Don't be intimidated by this picture. We'll walk you through every piece of it step by step in this chapter.
IMPORTANT: It is difficult for us to explain the roles of each player position in basketball. Why? There is no clear role or definition for each player position because every player does a little bit of everything. That's why many people agree that the traditional player positions are slightly archaic in modern basketball. With that said, we will do our best to explain each player position in this chapter.
What We'll Be Learning
In this chapter, we will learn about the five (5) basic player positions of a basketball team.
Note that when referring to the player positions in basketball we may use the following number scheme:
- (1) = Point Guard (PG)
- (2) = Shooting Guard (SG)
- (3) = Small Forward (SF)
- (4) = Power Forward (PF)
- (5) = Center (C)
- Point Guard (PG)
- Shooting Guard (SG)
- Small Forward (SF)
- Power Forward (PF)
- Center (C)
- Off Guards
We also offer interactive graphics for you to explore. We made one for the player positions of a basketball team to help you understand it.
