A very difficult violation to understand and for referees in basketball to call correctly is called charging. A charging violation is called on an offensive player with the ball who runs into the path of an already positioned defensive player.

Basketball Charging

For example, if a defensive player has both feet planted on the ground and is facing the opposing offensive player then it's charging.

REMEMBER: Referees call charging violations in the moment. It can be very difficult for referees to get it right and sometimes it's debatable. As a fan, you should just expect the variation in this call.
