Home vs. Away

Basketball is a game played between two (2) teams. A team is always classified as either:

Each classification comes with specific advantages in a basketball game.

The Home Team

The home team is the team that owns the playing surface. As a result, they have something called home court advantage.

Home Court Advantage

Home court advantage, or more generally home advantage is not unique to just basketball. In fact, it is a common term used across all types of sports. It is a mental edge that a team or individual has over the opponent.

This mental edge exists because:

  1. the team or individual has had prior experience on the playing surface.
  2. the team or individual has a higher number of fans in attendance.

The Away Team

The away team is the team that is visiting. They do not own the playing surface. They have the disadvantage of playing on the opposing team's court.

Cheering For Your Team

As a fan, you should be ready to cheer and root for your team of choice.

ANECDOTE: When I went to my first basketball game, I didn't realize that you're supposed to make noise only when the team you're not rooting for has the ball. The goal with making noise only when the other team has the ball as a fan is to make them miss shots and to help force turnovers. I remember making noise when my team had the ball and other fans looked at me like I didn't know what I was doing. Don't make this mistake!
