What is the base path in baseball?

A base path in baseball is an imaginary straight line path on the field that is determined once a fielder tries to tag the baserunner out. If the runner moves more than three ft outside of this path, he will be ruled out. For example, a runner cannot advance to second base from first base and veer into right field -- he would be called out in this case.
