What is a batting average in baseball?

A batting average in baseball is a measurement of how many times, on average, a player gets a hit every time he is at bat. Batting average is calculated by dividing a player's hits by his at bats, and is expressed as a decimal to the thousandths place. Although BA is listed in a single game's box score, it always refers to the player's total season batting average. According to the MLB website, an average BA is around .260, and a good BA is typically .300 or over.
