We've already learned about innings and the structure of a baseball game in chapter 2.2: Baseball Innings. A half-inning ends with three (3) outs are made.
In this tutorial, we will learn about extra innings and what happens when the score is tied at the end of the 9th inning.
Sometimes, a game lasts more than nine (9) innings and goes into extra innings. This happens when the score is tied after the bottom of the ninth.
When Does A Baseball Game End?
The away team always bats first in a baseball game. So, a baseball game will only end in the following scenarios:
- The home team is in the lead at the end of top-half of the inning
- The away team is in the lead at the end of the inning
How Many Extra Innings?
A baseball game will continue for as many extra innings as it takes for either one of these scenarios to occur.
